design your home by shaynna blaze

I first saw the lovely Miss Shaynna Blaze on Selling Houses Australia years ago and instantly fell in love with the woman (well, the kind of love a homewares-adoring gay lad can have for a woman). Years later, the interior decorating legend has released her very own book, Design Your Home. And true to form, it’s practical, attainable and uniquely Shaynna B!

Part of the reason I dug what Shaynna was all about on Selling Houses Australia was that it was always about sticking to a budget. Now I don’t know about you, but homewares and interior decorating when the budget is begging me not to purchase is the bane maree of my existence.

Now that her book is here, I feel that ethos is still in place; the ideas are not only practical but they’re broad. She’s not asking you to spend a lot, she’s not asking you to go to great lengths. The book simply asks you to look at your home, think about what your life needs and then goes about helping you determine how to implement it for you (no big bucks required).

The book is very well segmented so that you can flip to your required section with ease. Dining and Entertaining gives you great ideas to not only put together a room in terms of composition but how to dress it successfully too, with an entire section devoted to outdoor entertaining that makes you realise you don’t even need your own Charlie Albone to make your exterior look breathtaking!

The indoor areas are where Shaynna truly shines. Her section regarding the living areas raises some very interesting points around housing your television, making a focal point work and realising that judgements will be made about your home the moment people enter it; “family and friends will walk into your home and mentally take stock: ‘Well, this is you‘.” In my case, they’re thinking I’m a crazy cat lady with far too much love for cushions.

The chapter on the bedroom really made me take stock of my own. It discusses ideal layout, wardrobes and most importantly – the view from your bed! “If the bed is facing the a door or wardrobe, it’s not a very inspiring start to the day.” Bedside tables, under-bed storage and other options are discussed in a practical way, too!

The section on universal rules is perhaps the best. It guides you through the complexity of scale, placement, shape, numbers and the odds and evens, laying out the information in a very digestible way. It also touches on Feng Shui and how it can make your home work for you. Importantly, it also covers ensuring you never have your back to the door, because as Kath said in Kath & Kim, “your enemies can come in and clock you over the head”.

This gorgeous, high-gloss book ends with an amazing chapter on the home office, which was rather timely for me as I am in the midst of setting up my own (for blogging and crafting). Shaynna’s tips on ensuring it is as visually pleasing as possibly truly resonated, so I popped up a few art pieces in my own area to ensure I have something nice to look at.

All in all, this release is a must get! Not only because I adore this woman and love the smell of a high-gloss book, but because it really is a practical resource with so many gems of information that you can use to tailor your own space. Design Your Home, with it’s rules roundup at the end of each chapter, is not only information heavy but overflowing with inspiration. Get it, consume it, enjoy it!
