Autumn Decorating: Tips and Tricks for a Cosy Home

Autumn Decorating - Throws

We’ve just come out of an undeniably colourful summer, where bold and bright hues dominated homes. Now that Autumn has hit, it’s time to take things down a notch. But in true TLC style, there’s always a good dose of colour and quirk! On with my Autumn decorating tips!

Cushions and Throws

Layer cushions and throws on your couch to create cosiness – the same way you would with clothing! Ensure you choose pieces with a lot of texture to evoke comfort. Autumn is all about adding interest through texture and pattern as opposed to using crazy colour combos!

You can still make a colour statement, though; it’s just best achieved in Autumn by sticking to one accent colour – and really using the entire range of that colour. Red is a trending hue right now, so explore chilli reds, oranges and even maroons. They’re all warm tones and will help a lot in a cold space!

Autumn Decorating - Cushions

Candles are the most affordable way to update your space and instantly add mood to a room. In Autumn, though, it’s time to abandon those fruity, summery scents and opt for more calming and relaxing fragrances; think forest scents or even ones you’d use in cooking like vanilla and cinnamon.

If you’re a fan of candle holders, cluster them together in subdued hues to once again add interest without the colour explosion. The below candles from West Elm are a perfect example of this.

Kitchen and Dining

In the dining room, opt for a neutral tablecloth for easy accessorising and add colour through napkins and placemats. If you’re looking for an affordable update, consider a few quirky mugs like the owl ones above. Another great way to liven up the room is to use metallic accents. Gold, copper and bronze are all warm shades and will do wonders in creating a cosy vibe.

Autumn Decorating - Bedding

As you transition into Autumn, it’s important to choose some lightweight pieces. To keep the look light yet inviting, keep patterns simple to ensure relaxation occurs. Layer throws and cushions on top of the bed as the weather gets colder and once again – choose one accent colour and use it with a neutral base!
