My Morning at the Designer Rugs Showroom

Designer Rugs - Chris with Director Yosi Tal

I’m nearing the end of my course at the International School of Colour and Design, which means my rug design project is almost due. In a nutshell, students in the course submit a rug design and the winner of the assignment actually gets their design produce by Designer Rugs. It’s a pretty exciting opportunity for us to be connected with an Aussie icon like this! Naturally, I had to hit the Edgecliff showroom for design inspiration and was lucky enough to speak to managing director Yosi Tal while I was there (score!).

Designer Rugs have almost been around as long as I have – they started in 1986 and are now industry leaders. They’ve also worked with big names like Akira Isogawa, Greg Natale, Alex Perry, Dinosaur Designs and loads more, so it’s pretty damn exciting that as a design student I also get the opportunity to rub shoulders (or pile) with such icons.

You may have seen the stunning work of Designer Rugs and not even have known it; they’ve decked out Westfield Bondi Junction in some luxurious designs, just to name one. They’ve also been working with the International School of Colour and Design for years now.

“We have enjoyed a long and creative relationship with ISCD; it has been more then 10 years,” Yosi told me. “For us, it’s also about Industry giving back to Education which is very important.”

BELOW: I mentioned to Yosi how much I liked these artworks and coincidently, they’re the work of his wife, Derryn Tal (I’ll have to interview her for the blog soon!).Designer Rugs - Artworks by Derryn TalDesigner Rugs Edgecliff

Needless to say, my time spent at Designer Rugs has filled me with a lot of design inspiration and a real sense of what colours and patterns are trending at the moment. I have a very clear idea of what I am going to design, so when I have completed it (that’s the fun part) I will pop it up and get your opinions.

The winner not only gets their rug produced by Designer Rugs, but it gets snapped for Inside Out magazine too. How good is that!?

Outside of writing the TLC Interiors blog, Chris is an interior stylist and author. You can also catch him on your TV screens as a designer on Channel 10's Changing Rooms. If you'd like to book a design consult with Chris, you can find out more here
